Charles E. Smitley, 74, of New Philadelphia, died Friday evening, December 22, 2006, at Union Hospital in Dover.Born November 28, 1932 in Roswell, he was the son of the late Ernest Smitley and Beatrice (Day) Renicker. After completing his formal education, Charles served his country in the military stationed in Japan. He is a retiree of Greer Steel of 35 years. He formerly owned and operated Smitley Service Center and Ohio Valley Salvage Pools of New Philadelphia, Lorain, and Columbus. He was a member of the Holmes United Methodist Church, the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge, and the New Philadelphia V.F.W.Charles is survived b his wife, Bernice of 47 years; his daughter, Michelle (Jack) Ford and their children Olyvia, Alexis, and Logan all of New Philadelphia; his son, Michael (Dawn) Smitley and their son, Cooper, of New Philadelphia; his son, Charles R. Smitley of Cocoa Beach, Florida; his brothers, Raymond Renicker of Dover, Dean (Diane) Renicker of New Philadelphia, and Jerry Renicker; a sister, Wanda (Bill) Zeigler of Midvale; brother-in-laws, William (Betty) Bidinger of Dover and George (Sandra) Bidinger of Celebration, Florida; his mother-in-law, Olive Bidinger of Dover; and his sister-in-law, Jean Renicker of New Philadelphia; and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Harry Renicker.Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. Funeral services will be held at the Geib Funeral Center at Dover on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. with the Revs. Steve Bailey and James Mason co-officiating. Burial will follow the service at Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia where the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legions will conduct military rites. Friends and family are invited back to the Geib Funeral Center where a celebration of life reception will be hosted by Charles’ family in the Hospitality Center.In memory of Charles, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Tuscarawas county Inc., 201 W. 3rd Street Dover, Ohio 44622.
