Charles E. Jewell, 84, of Midvale, died Monday, June 1, 2009 in Union Hospital at Dover following an extended illness.A son of the late Charles Henry and Wanda Viola (Stafford) Jewell, Charles was born at Parral, Ohio on March 18, 1925.A longtime resident of Midvale, Charles was a veteran of the United States Army. During World War II, he was stationed at Trinidad in the British West Indies.On December 31, 1949, Charles married the former Betty Jean Swinderman and together they reared four children, Glen, Bonnie, Carol and Connie. The couple shared 45 years of marriage prior to Betty’s passing on June 19, 1995.He worked as a mechanic for various companies throughout the years and was a C.B. radio enthusiast. Charles was known by his C.B. buddies as “Monkey Wrench Charlie”.Charles enjoyed “tinkering” in the garage and repairing lawn mowers. He was a familiar face at Midvale Speedway where he raced stock cars with his son, Glen, for over 30 years.His greatest joy in life however was his family. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and he will be sadly missed by his little playmate, his great grandson, Curtis.He is survived by his son, Glen (Sherri) Jewell of Dover; his daughters, Bonnie Jean (George) Reichman of Wainwright, Carol (Bob) Devore of Midvale and Connie Jewell of Canton; eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Betty Jean; a sister, Sally Tidrick and three brothers, Bill and John Jewell and Harry Jones.Family and friends may call on Thursday, June 4, 2009 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Charles’ life will be held on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Chapel with Rev. Hugh Berry officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover where the Midvale V.F.W will render military honors. Following the committal service, a memorial reception will be held in the fellowship hall of Dover Faith United Methodist Church.Those wishing to do so may send the family a personal condolence and view an online memorial by visiting the funeral home website.Contributions may be made in Charles’ memory to a charity of one’s choice.
