Cataldo “Howard” Faniola, 86, of New Philadelphia passed away Friday evening, September 7, 2012 in Park Village Care Center at Dover following a period of declining health.

Born January 22, 1926 in Roswell, he was the son of the late Steve and Mary (Scalambrino) Faniola.

After completing his formal education at Roswell and Midvale, Howard joined the United States Army where he honorably served his country.

He then spent the remainder of his professional career at the former Joy Manufacturing in New Philadelphia.

Howard was a member of Sacred Heart Church in addition to a number of veteran’s organizations including the Tuscarawas VFW, the Army Navy Club, the Amvets, the Moose Lodge, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a participant in the Tuscarawas County Coin Club and a founding member and lifelong supporter of the Tuscarawas Central Catholic Booster Club.

His family includes two daughters, Joan Warren and Pat (Robert) Metarko, both of New Philadelphia; his son, Jack A. (Bev) Wise of Dennison; his sister, Donna Sopinski of New Philadelphia; and his son-in-law, Nicholas Scalambrino of New Philadelphia.

Eight grandchildren, Steve Machacek, Cheryl (Joe) McCartney, Julie (Jim) Farrell, Todd Wise, Chad (Ginger) Wise, Joshua Wise, Lee Anne Metarko and Chris Metarko and 12 great-grandchildren complete the family.

In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, the former Dorothy G. Tipton, who passed away January 13, 1990; and 2 brothers, Joe and Pete; 1 sister, Tressa Faniola; his daughter, Carol Scalambrino; his brother-in-law, Ed Sopinski; and his grandson, John Kleski.

Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral celebrating Howard’s life will be held in the funeral home chapel Wednesday beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Father Jeff Coning officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia with the VFW rendering military honors.

Friends are invited to St. Ambrose Hall, located beside Sacred Heart Church, where a meal will be shared.
