Carson D. Keener, age 79 of New Philadelphia died early Thursday, March 20, 2014 in Mercy Medical Center at Canton following a brief period of declining health.
Born at Zoarville, on October 18, 1934, Carson was a son of the late Reuben C. and Nema (Felgenhauer) Keener.
A 1952 graduate of Dover High School, Carson was employed by Arnold, Rosch and Hartline Engineering from 1952 to 1969, as a Registered Surveyor. In 1969, he joined the city of New Philadelphia and became the city surveyor until his retirement in 1997. He also served as a longtime member of the New Philadelphia Planning Commission.
On July 20, 1956, Carson married the former Carol Sue Knisely in St. John’s United Church of Christ at Dover. The following year, Carson joined the United States Army, where he was stationed at Fort Ord, California until his discharge in 1959.
He enjoyed bowling, traveling, and camping, listening to Country and Polka music and was a fan of baseball, especially the Cleveland Indians. Carson’s memberships included the St. John’s United Church of Christ, the Tuscarawas County Senior Center, and the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. #510, where he was a life member.
In addition to his wife, Carson is survived by a brother, Carroll Z. (Linda) Keener; a nephew, Mike and a great-niece, Natasha. Completing the family are an aunt, an uncle, and numerous cousins.
The family will receive guests on Sunday, March 23, 2014, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Rev. Thomas Dunkle will lead a service celebrating Carson’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Monday, March 24, 2014 at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Following the service, all are invited to share in a meal and fellowship in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the New Philadelphia funeral home.
The family requests memorial contributions in Carson’s name be directed to St. John’s United Church of Christ, 409 Wooster Avenue, Dover, Ohio 44622 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
