Carolyn L. Newman, age 66, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, November 16, 2011 in Union Hospital at Dover.A daughter of the late Holly E. and Stella M. Burns Rickey, Carolyn was born at Springfield, Massachusetts on August 9, 1945.Raised at Wheelersburg, Ohio, Carolyn was a 1963 graduate of Wheelersburg High School. She went on to obtain a Bachelor of Education degree from Ohio University and later earned a Master’s Degree from Ashland University.Her career as an educator began in 1965 as a first grade teacher for Bowerston Elementary School. She went on to the New Philadelphia City Schools where she served as a teacher and principal for nearly 30 years. She worked her final three years as an educator with the Lancaster City Schools, retiring in 2003.Carolyn was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at New Philadelphia and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed craftwork and teaching others the same art. Additionally, she was a developer and organizer of the Quaker Peddler craft show once held at East Elementary School at New Philadelphia. Moreover, she enjoyed taking annual shopping trips with her educator friends, watching wildlife, feeding the birds and being outdoors.She is survived by her husband, Edward “Ed” Newman, whom she met on Christmas Day 1967, and married on June 15, 1968; their son, Bryan (Tracey) Newman of Pickerington, Ohio and two grandsons, Alex and Zachary Newman.Completing the family are five sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law and their families.The family will receive friends on Friday, November 18, 2011, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. The Reverend Hugh B. Berry will lead a celebration of Carolyn’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in the Sherrodsville Memorial Gardens.Those unable to attend may send the family personal condolences by signing the online guest registry located on the funeral home’s website.Memorial contributions in Carolyn’s name may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad Street, Canfield, Ohio 44406 or to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 W Third Street, Dover, Ohio 44622.
