Carl O. Blasenhauer, age 91, of Mineral City, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009, in Union Hospital at Dover following a period of declining health.A son of the late Otto and Carrie (McCreery) Blasenhauer, Carl was born on April 12, 1917, at Carrollton, Ohio.Carl was a 1935 graduate of Mineral City Schools. From the young age of 14, Carl understood the value of hard work as he began his day at 4 AM to deliver milk every morning before school. Following that time, he began working for his grandfather’s plumbing business and eventually purchased the company from him. Along side his wife, the former Fern Welch, whom he married February 7, 1939, Carl worked to develop his business, Blasenhauer Plumbing and Heating at Mineral City. Additionally, he developed two housing allotments throughout the Mineral City area.Carl was fascinated by the opportunities that he received by providing service to his community. He was a founding member of the Mineral City Lions Club, and served on the Mineral City School Board, and the Mineral City Water Board. Moreover, service to his church, St. Paul’s Community Church, at Mineral City was a very important aspect of his life. For many years, Carl took an active role as an Elder and served on the church consistory.More recently, Carl had become very involved with the preservation of local history as a member of the Mineral City Historical Society. As a result of Carl’s dedication to his community, church, and county, in 2008, Carl became a recipient of the Zeisberger-Heckewelder Medal, presented by the Tuscarawas County Historical Society for outstanding contributions to the county.While Carl’s hobbies and interests were vast, he found great joy in collecting, building, and restoring antique cars. He particularly enjoyed his Ford model A and T vehicles that he spent countless hours caring for.Upon their retirement, Carl and Fern spent a great amount of time traveling in their motor home to many different areas of the United States and Canada, but found their most enjoyable trips to be the ones that took them to view the sites of the western states.Following sixty-seven years of marriage, Fern passed away on August 21, 2006. The family is grateful to Carla Murphy, Brenda Mc Nutt, Darlene Murphy, and Kayla Hayhurst for providing exceptional, loving care of Carl and Fern. Carl especially appreciated the outings and activities they provided making his life more enjoyable.Carl is survived by two daughters, Brenda (husband Kenneth) Haueter of Willard, Ohio, and Elaine (husband Nelson) Miller of Alliance, Ohio. Five grandchildren, Gregory (wife Sharry) Haueter of Toledo, David (wife Kris) Haueter of Sparta, New Jersey, Beth (husband Matthew) O’Leary of Scottsdale, Arizona, Eric (wife Cheryl) Leach of Canton, Ohio, and Ryan (wife Nancy) Leach, of Arlington, Texas, Nine great-grandchildren, Matthew, Nathan and Andrew Haueter, Abby and Katie Haueter, Jordin and Madelyn O’Leary, and Erinn and Shannon Leach, and numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.In addition to his parents and wife, Carl is preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Blasenhauer, Arlene Grothe, and Donna Wise; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Haueter.The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 25, 2009, from 3:00PM â?? 5:00 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. Pastor Mark Gross will lead a service celebrating Carl’s life in St. Paul’s Community Church, 8733 First Street, Mineral City on Monday, January 26, 2009, at 2:00 PM. Interment will be held in the German Cemetery at Mineral City.The family requests that memorial contributions in Carl’s name be made to St. Paul’s Community Church, PO Box 357, Mineral City, 44656.
