Carl Harvey Smith, 82, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013 in First Community Village at Columbus following a period of declining health.
Born in Harrison County on December 10, 1930, Carl was the son of the late William Leroy and Flora (Waller) Smith.
In 1948, he graduated from Flushing High School, continuing his formal education at The Ohio State University where he received a B.S. in Business Administration. He also studied at Kent State University focusing his coursework around personnel management.
On July 3, 1948, Carl married his lifelong companion and friend, the former Marjorie Ellen Webb. Together, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Carla. Throughout his lifetime, he became fond of hobbies including boating, RVing, square dancing and cars. Carl was also an avid fan of OSU football and working with his hands. Most importantly, he loved his family and creating memories with them.
Carl honorably served his country in the United States Navy and Air Force from 1954 through 1957. Upon completion, he joined the professional workforce where he was employed with General Motors, Industrial Nucleonics, Martin Marietta, and Harris Corp, prior to his retirement.
Carl also participated in a variety of organizations including the Whirl & Twirl Square Dance Club, Alpha Kappa Psi, the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445, the American Compensation Association, and The OSU Alumni Association.
Carl will be deeply missed by his wife, Marjorie; his daughter, Carla Lane; and his grandchildren, Anna Grace and William Fred Lane all of Columbus;his sister-in-law, Janet Wilson of New Philadelphia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his siblings, Bea, Leona, Lemoyne, Gertrude, Flora “Sis”, Leroy, and Alvin “Bud”.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Tuesday, September 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. A service celebrating Carl’s life will be held in the funeral home’s chapel on Wednesday September 11th beginning at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Longview Cemetery in New Athens, Ohio. A luncheon will be held in New Athens Methodist Church following the committal service.
