Carl E. Hykes, 58, of Carrollton went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 4, 2003, at Aultman Hospital in Canton, following a lengthy illness.Born July 18, 1945 in Twin City Hospital, he was a son of the late Francis E. Hykes and the former Catherine A. Breehl. After graduating from Midvale High School, Carl continued his education obtaining his undergraduate degree from Malone College and his Masters degree from The University of Akron. He enjoyed many years of teaching throughout the valley. He spent much of his career educating students at Indian Valley High School. After he retired, Carl taught at Connotton Valley High School, was a substitute teacher at Carrollton High School, and tutored students at New Philadelphia Middle School.His lifelong devotion to and membership at the Holmes United Methodist Church stands as testimony of his life spent serving the Lord.Carl is survived by his devoted wife, the former Linda Gail Johnson. In addition to Linda, Carl will be sadly missed by his family including a daughter, Tiffini (Alan) Bloniarz of Green, Ohio; a son, Timothy (Kelli) Hykes of Raleigh, North Carolina; four step-daughters, Theresa Ratcliff and Kathy (Doug) Matan, both of Columbus, Terrilynn (Tim) Torrey of Deltona, Florida, and Janet (Tom) Brock of Mansfield, Ohio; three grandsons; eight step-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Eva (Marion) Haines and Barbara Hykes, both of New Philadelphia; two brothers, John Hykes of New Philadelphia, and Dr. David (Linda) Hykes of Wakeman, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Vickie Day Hykes of New Philadelphia; 19 nieces and nephews; and 18 great-nieces and great-nephews.In addition to Carl’s parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Francis and Franklin Hykes.A Memorial Service to celebrate Carl’s life will be held at the Holmes United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 6, 2003 beginning at 3:00 pm with Rev. Joe Glassner officiating. In keeping with Carl’s wishes, he will be cremated through the local care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory.
