Carl E. Carruthers, 96, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday evening, March 25, 2004 at Morningview Care Center after a three-week illness. Up until then, he was living at his home.Carl was born April 23, 1907 near Tippecanoe, Ohio to the late George E. and Florence Green Carruthers. At the age of 16 he left school to begin his 44-year career with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. On July 27, 1927, he married Mary L. Miller in New Philadelphia. The couple enjoyed nearly 76 years of marriage before her death on May 14, 2003.Carl and Mary were the oldest members of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia. For more than 50 years, he was a member of Freeport Lodge No. 415, F. & A. M. and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 319 and the Cambridge Scottish Rite.After retirement, Carl enjoyed refinishing and caning chairs. He took a particular interest in antiques, especially clocks. Many will remember Carl’s love of gardening as well.Carl and Mary raised two daughters, Helen (Clark) Todd and Shirley (Max) Moreland, both of New Philadelphia and a son, Paul R. Carruthers of Longs, SC. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Darla (Lew) Clark of Upper Arlington, OH; Dana (Carol) Moreland of Dover; David (Kris) Moreland of New Philadelphia; Mark (Okhwa) Todd of Virginia; Mary Lou (Mike) Lawver of New Philadelphia; Dale (Bev) Carruthers of Virginia; and Cathy (Wayne) Collins of South Carolina; and 19 great-grandchildren.In addition to his parents and Mary, Carl was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Dickey and Nellie Wheeler and a brother, Clyde.Calling hours will be Sunday, March 28, 2004 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home where the funeral will be conducted Monday, March 29, 2004 at 10:30 AM. His pastor, Rev. James E. Taggart, will officiate. Burial, alongside Mary, will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. Following the cemetery committal, everyone is invited to share a meal in the Otterbein United Methodist Church fellowship hall.Memorial contributions may be made to the Otterbein United Methodist Church, 156 Beaver Ave., NE, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
