Carl Duane Davis, 89, of Tuscarawas, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2012 in Beacon Pointe Rehabilitation Center following a period of declining health.
Born in Zanesville on February 2, 1923, he was the son of the late Howard and Maud (VanHorn) Davis.
Following graduation from Tuscarawas Warwick High School, Carl married his lifelong companion, the former Haldene Fern Spence on May 13, 1943 in Sharon, PA. A few weeks after their wedding, Carl joined the United States Army where he honorably served his country during WWII in North Africa and Italy.
In 1955, Carl established Davis Radiator Shop where he owned and operated the company until his retirement in 1999. Today, the shop continues to serve the community under the ownership of his son, Mark.
Throughout their lifetime, Carl and Haldene greatly enjoyed camping at Tappan Lake in the summers. There they met many dear friends.
They also enjoyed yearly vacations at Atlantic Beach in North Carolina with their entire family. Carl truly treasured spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Finally, they created many memories traveling throughout the United States and internationally, by car, plane and cruise ship. On numerous occasions, Carl and Haldene returned to Italy where he served during the war.
Carl also was a longtime member of the Sharon Moravian Church in Tuscarawas.
He is survived by two daughters, Cristene (Tim) McCarthy of New Philadelphia and Melissa (Rick) Baker of Bolivar; a son, Mark (Rhonda) Davis of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Shawn McCarthy of Dover, Kathleen (Jason) Celce of North Canton, Jason (Kathryn) Lehigh of Delaware, Amber (Jay) Hunker of Kernersville, North Carolina, Dylan Flickinger of Phoenixville, PA and Carly (Jeff) Positano of New Philadelphia; his great-grandchildren, Chelsea (Zac) Creager of Dover, Markie Kate, Alyson and Alexis McCarthy, Tyler, Brennen and Connor Celce, Olivia, Charlie and Simon Lehigh, Jakob, Makenzie, Gabrielle, Jarrett and Sophie Hunker and Riley Positano; his great-great-granddaughter, Jana Creager; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to Carl’s parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Craig Duane Davis; his grandson, Craig McCarthy; his two brothers, Larry and Chuck Davis; and his sisters, Edna Vernon, Leona Jenkins, and Helen Watkins.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 23, 2012 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Carl’s life will be held on Monday, September 24 at 1:30 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Chapel with Pastor Larry Fletcher officiating. Burial will follow in Sharon Moravian Church Cemetery at Tuscarawas where military honors will be rendered. A memorial reception will be held in First Assembly of God at New Philadelphia following the committal service.
