Carl Bray Toot

Carl Bray Toot, age 80 of New Philadelphia, died peacefully in Mercy Medical Center at Canton following a brief illness.

Born at Canton, Ohio on January 14, 1933 Carl was a son of the late Bray and Mildred (Davy) Toot.

He was a graduate of the former Dellroy High School where he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. Carl continued his education at Kent State University where he ultimately earned his bachelor’s degree in education.

In 1956, Carl entered the United States Air Force and served as a pilot where he earned the rank of Captain prior to leaving the service to begin his teaching career. Soon after his discharge, he began working in the Richmond, Virginia area as a shop class teacher for the Henrico County School District. While in Virginia Carl worked for and earned his Masters of Education from the University of Virginia.

He later relocated to Pitt County in North Carolina where he worked as the Vocational Education Director until his retirement in 1994. Upon retiring, he moved to the Tuscarawas Valley and worked as a substitute teacher for Buckeye Career Center.

A longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church at New Philadelphia, Carl served as an Elder and Clerk of Sessions. He loved his family deeply and enjoyed being with them to watch ACC College Basketball games. He was also well known for his ability to create professional woodcraft pieces.

Carl is survived by the love of his life, the former Maxine West; four children, Terry Toot of Washington D.C., Carl Bray Toot, Jr. of Raleigh, North Carolina, Will (Tammy) Long and Wendy (Bill) Kramer all of Carrollton; a brother, Rev. Gene Toot of East Liverpool, Ohio, and sister, Marna Holcomb of North Canton.

Completing the family are four grandchildren, Olivia, Jayson, Jami, and Devin; three great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Gavin and Diesel and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive guests on Friday, May 31, 2013 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Rev. Gene Toot will lead a service celebrating Carl’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
