Captain Devern C. Stone

Captain Devern “Dick” C. Stone, Retired, age 85, of New Philadelphia, and formerly of Cleveland, died peacefully late Wednesday evening, November 22, 2006, in Amberwood Manor at New Philadelphia. Born at Dayton, Ohio, on March 16, 1921, Mr. Stone was a son of the late Fred D. and Florence L. Neander Stone. Mr. Stone completed high school at Dayton and continued his education at the University of Maryland before he entered the United States Military at the urging of his father. For the next 23 years, he served in the Air Force, attaining the rank of Captain upon his honorable discharge in 1964. On June 19, 1965, Dick married the former Delores Bertka, who survives, and resides at New Philadelphia. Together the couple retired to the Atwood Lake Region from Cleveland before permanently moving to New Philadelphia in 1988. Dick belonged to and was an active member of the Central Catholic Booster Club and was a life member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. In addition to his wife, Dick’s family includes a son, Michael (Patricia) Stone of Columbus, Ohio and a daughter Sharon Rowe of Dayton, Ohio, a step-son, Michael Corona of Atwood Lake, a granddaughter, a grandson, and three step-grandchildren, a sister, Vivian Hughes of Spring Hill, Florida, a brother, Bob (Roberta) Stone of Dayton, Ohio, completes the family. One brother, Jimmy Stone is deceased. Friends are invited to call Monday afternoon, from 2PM until 4PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. The Rev. Dr. Steven R. Bailey will lead funeral services Tuesday morning, at 10:30 AM in the funeral home’s chapel . Burial, with military honors will be rendered by the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Honor Guard, will follow at the Sherrodsville Memorial Gardens.
