Calvin A. Eckert, Jr. age 84, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, in Union Hospital at Dover.A son of the late Calvin and Leona (Levengood) Eckert, Calvin was born at Louisville, Ohio on January 25, 1926.Calvin was a 1943 graduate of Sebring High School and would earn a bachelor’s degree from the College of Wooster in 1948. He later obtained a Master of Arts from Ohio University. Calvin began his teaching and coaching career at Magnolia and spent the twenty-seven years of his career with the New Philadelphia City Schools where he taught Chemistry and General Science and ultimately retired in 1983 as an administrator.During his attendance at Mount Union College, Calvin met the love of his life, the former Phyllis Bliss and married in 1946 and would teach alongside one another for a number of years at New Philadelphia. Calvin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church at New Philadelphia. He enjoyed spending the summers traveling and camping with his family.In all their travels, they were able to sightsee in almost every state in the continental United States, all of the Canadian Provinces, and Mexico. Following retirement, Calvin and Phyllis would still enjoy camping as members of the Hi-Lo camping club.In addition to his wife, Calvin is survived by two sons, David Eckert (fianc�e Georgia Sweaney) of New Philadelphia and Steve Eckert (wife, Kim) of Dover as well as a brother-in-law, Herbert Kehr (wife, Josie) of California. Five grandchildren, Tony, Jon-Michael, Tatum, Kody, and Sami Eckert; a great-grandson, Cameron; an aunt, Dorothy Miller, and numerous cousins complete the family.A funeral service celebrating Calvin’s life will be led by Rev. Mark Behrendt on Friday, May 14, 2010, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. In keeping with Calvin’s wishes there will be no prior visitation.Those unable to attend may send the family personal condolences by signing the online guest registry located on the funeral home’s website.The family requests that memorial contributions in Calvin’s name be directed to the Quaker Foundation, PO BOX 627, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
