Byron Eugene Hummell

Byron Eugene Hummell, age 89, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully early Saturday evening, in Amberwood Manor at New Philadelphia. Born at home on the family farm January 18, 1920, Byron was a son of the late Arthur and Emma Arbogast Hummell. Best known as Barney to his family and friends, he was a 1939 graduate of New Philadelphia High School. He went on to attend college at Wittenberg until joining the United States Army following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Byron returned from the war and married the former Zelma Mae Wright on February 23, 1952. They would celebrate fifty years together prior to her death on July 4, 2002. He’ll be remembered for his service as a security guard, and for many years was stationed at the former Joy Manufacturing. Playing the guitar for his family and friends, spending time outside, enjoying nature and animals were among his favorite pastimes. Survivors include a niece; Sinda Hummell-Persons of North Canton, and two great nieces; Robbin Stuhldreher of Jackson Township and Lucinda VanHorn at Akron. Byron’s best friend, Ed (wife Dolly) Canfield of New Philadelphia, and Byron’s caregivers Pete (wife Bonnie) Maurer, of Dover, complete the family. In addition to his wife and parents, Byron is preceded in death by his brother; Arthur “Horace” Hummell. Friends are invited to call Tuesday from 5 to 7 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Terry Canfield will lead Mr. Hummell’s funeral service Wednesday morning at 10 in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will follow, with military honors, in the East Avenue Cemetery.Following the committal service, a luncheon reception will be given in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home.
