Bob Ed Harris, 75, died unexpectedly in his New Philadelphia home on Sunday, January 5, 2003. He was born in New Philadelphia to the late Edward and Grace Snyder Harris and graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1945. While there, he played half-back for the undefeated, state-ranked 1944 Quaker football team. After serving in the Navy from 1945 to 1946, he began his college career at Heidelberg College. Woody Hayes managed to lure him to Denison University, where he played half-back under Woody for an undefeated Denison team. He met the love of his life, Helen Hannawalt, during the summer before graduating from Denison in 1950. He and Helen were married in December, 1950.Bob went on to a career in management starting with Warner & Swasey. He spent the last 25 years prior to his retirement as an operations manager with Schwab Industries of New Philadelphia.He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia, the New Philadelphia Masonic Lodge No. 177, F. & A. M., the B. P. O. e. No. 510, and was a past-president of the New Philadelphia Jaycees, Central Elementary PTA and the Dover Rotary Club. Additionally he was a member of the Atwood Yacht Club.Bob’s passions included supporting the NPHS Quakers, The Ohio State University Buckeyes, and the Cleveland Browns. And he loved to beat Dover.Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and community servant. He is survived by his wife, Helen, his children, Wendy (Dan) Evans of New Philadelphia, Jeff (Cynthia) Harris of Brookfield, WI and Brett (Dianne) Harris of Dublin, OH; five granddaughters, Jessica and Angie Evans (Wendy & Dan’s daughters), Sarah Harris (Jeff & Cynthia’s daughter), Kayla and Kendall Harris (Brett & Dianne’s daughters), and his sister, Susan (Tom) Larkin of New Philadelphia.Calling hours will be Tuesday, January 7, 2003 from 1:00 to 3:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home. The funeral will be Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at 10:30 AM in the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Steven R. Bailey officiating. Immediately following the chapel service a reception will be given at the First United Methodist Church. Private burial, alongside his parents, will take place at East Avenue Cemetery.
