Betty Winters, 78, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday, January 6, 2005, at her residence following and extended illness. Betty was born at her family home in Dennison on June 25, 1926, to the late Clarence H. and Norma L. (Wells) Hooker, and was a graduate of the former Uhrichsville High School.On October 17, 1947, she married William E. “Bill” Winters, former county commissioner, and shared 52 years of marriage with him prior to his death in l999.She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia and the New Philadelphia VFW Women’s Auxiliary, and a life member of both the Tuscarawas County Democratic Women and the Federated Democratic Women, and a past member of the New Philadelphia Elks Ladies Auxiliary. An advocate for Tuscarawas County, Betty actively worked as campaign manager for her husband, Bill, during his election bids for county commissioner. She was also employed at the State Data Center in New Philadelphia until her retirement in l991.She is survived by a daughter, Betty Jane Heavilin and son, William E. (Linda K.) Winters, both of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Sindy K. (Scott) Blair of Englewood, O., John W. (Steph) Heavilin of Uhrichsville, Doug W. Winters of St. Louis, MO, and Jeff A. Winters, of New Philadelphia; sisters, Norma Jane (Mike) Dorsey and Carol Ann (Jim) Marsh, both of New Philadelphia; sister-in-law, Betty Hooker of New Philadelphia; brothers, C.H. (Doris) Hooker, Jr. of Newcomerstown, and Carl E. Hooker and Dean R. (Pam) Hooker, both of Uhrichsville; great-grandchildren, Travis J. Heavilin, Haylee N. Heavilin, Lexis M. Blair; and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Jim Hooker, and son-in-law, Terry Lee Heavilin.Visitation will be Sunday, January 9, 2005, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Services will be on Monday, January 10, at 1:30 p.m. at the Geib Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Steve Bailey officiating. Burial will be at East Avenue Cemetery in New Philadelphia. A reception at the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia will follow the committal.Memorial contributions may be directed to the Tuscarawas County Senior Center, 233 W.
