Betty Jane Wells of Tuscarawas, passed peacefully, just days before her 85th birthday, on Saturday, November 30, 2013 in Union Hospital at Dover, while in the care of Community Hospice.
Born on December 7, 1928 at Dover, Betty was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Helen M. (Miller) Saffell.
She was a 1947 graduate of the former Tuscarawas-Warwick Schools and on October 3, 1948 married Don C. Wells. Together the couple reared a daughter and a son and shared in 54 years of marriage prior to his passing on December 27, 2002.
For more than 70 years, Betty was a member of Sharon Moravian Church and an active member of the Martha Housman Circle. She was a familiar face at the former Harts Family Center where she worked for more than 18 years and for nearly 10 years, later greeted many of her former Harts customers as they entered Wal-Mart.
An ever busy individual, Betty had served as a scout leader for her son’s troop 461 and later enjoyed socializing with the Warwick Senior Citizens, the Harts Lunch Bunch and joining her 1947 classmates for their monthly luncheons.
She is survived by a daughter, Dawn Ronald of Tuscarawas, a son Steve (Cathy) Wells of Gnadenhutten; a brother, Al (Joanne) Saffell of Dover; a sister, Carol (Jim) Booth of New Philadelphia, and four sisters-in-law, Helen Saffell of Canton, Sarah Saffell of Dover, Carolyn Weaver of Warren, Ohio and Sherry Wells of Colorado.
Six grandchildren, Tom (companion, Renee Jones) Ronald, Amanda (Troy) Belknap all of New Philadelphia, Aaron (Nikki) Wells of Gnadenhutten, Travis (Alex) Wells of Ragersville, Tori (Josh) Noah of New Philadelphia and Candi (Ty) Enama of Gnadenhutten; nine great-grandchildren, Rozalyn and Avalyn Belknap, Noah, Caleb, and Luke Wells, Ella, Camden, Emmalyn Enama and Gracelynn Noah as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Robert Saffell; a son-in-law, Woody Ronald, and a brother-in-law, David Wells.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Rev. John Wallace and Pastor Larry Hostetler will lead a funeral celebrating Betty’s life in the Sharon Moravian Church on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 2:00 PM. Burial alongside her husband will follow in the Sharon Moravian Church Cemetery. Following services, all are invited to share in a meal and fellowship in the Social Hall of the Sharon Moravian Church.
