Betty Jane Kern

Betty Jane Kern, 85, of New Philadelphia, passed away Friday, March 17, 2006 at Aultman Hospital in Canton.Born October 12, 1920 in New Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Vadena (Grimm) Thomas. She was married January 31, 1942 to Melvin (Shorty) Kern who preceded her in death in 1998.She graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1938. Mrs. Kern retired from the Kitchen Corner at Buehler’s Supermarket in New Philadelphia. She had also formerly worked at Hercules, La Fountaine’s Variety Store, Miller’s Studio Gift Shop, B & K Lunch Stand and Kreisher Drug Store.Mrs. Kern was a member of the First Moravian Church at Dover, and a long time member of the Golden Circle Christian Fellowship. Betty was a talented and creative crafter, spending many hours making beautiful gifts for her family and friends. Every Christmas had a new surprise creation. She also enjoyed bowling, family gatherings and cooking for her family and friends. Mrs. Kern is survived by her family which includes two daughters, Mrs. Lael “Linda” Nussbaum of Midland, Michigan and Mrs. G. Randall “Nancy” Gibbs of New Philadelphia; a sister, Mrs. Margery Kratz, her daily card playing partner and Bingo buddy, of New Philadelphia; and 4 grandchildren, Jennifer (Jim) Summers, Scott (Kim) Nussbaum, Aaron (Gretchen) Gibbs and Rebekah (Benjamin) Cole; 6 great-grandchildren, Emily, Olivia and Abigail Summers, Brendan, Kyle, and Katelyn Nussbaum and a 7th great-grandchild to be born in July.Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where services will be conducted on Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel with Rev. Allen Bergmann officiating. Burial will follow in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service the family will host a meal in the Geib Family Center located adjacent to the funeral home.
