Betty Jane Bain

May 2, 1921 — June 22, 2015

Betty Jane Bain, 94, of Dover, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 22, 2015 at Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.

A daughter of the late Willard and Marybelle (Fox) McCauley, Betty was born May 2, 1921 at Distant, Pennsylvania.

Betty graduated from New Bethlehem High School in 1939. Then on August 13, 1943, she married Harold Bain and together they raised two daughters, Carol and Marsha. The couple shared 59 years of marriage prior to Harold’s passing on March 1, 2003.

In 1949, Betty accompanied Harold on what they thought would be a two week work trip and she has been an area resident ever since. After relocating to Dover Betty became a member of the First Church of God at New Philadelphia and it was also her desire to stay at home in order to care for her husband and daughters. Fortunately for her, these two opportunities allowed her to dedicate her talents as an organist and pianist to doing God’s work. Over the 80 years she served as a musician she performed for more than 15,000 church services, weddings, funerals and other events. Also during that time Betty served as the original pianist for the McGuire Sisters and had the opportunity to play for Bill Gaither and Dale and Doug Oldham when they visited her church. Betty often told others that it was “By His Grace” that she was able to play music as long as she did and therefore, at the age of 86, she recorded a CD titled, “By His Grace”.

She is survived by her daughters, Carol (Adrian) Schaar of Dover and Marsha Dunaway of New Philadelphia; her grandchildren, Melanie (Brian) Cronebach of Dover, Kera (Tom) Ackerman of Lexington, Kentucky, Hallie (Eric) McGlumphy of Dover and Kyle (Crystal) Dunaway of New Philadelphia; her great grandchildren Bryn and Seth Cronebach, Anna Kate and Claire Ackerman, Camryn and Brooke McGlumphy and Brenden and Braxton Dunaway; a sister, Wilda Huber of New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; a sister-in-law, Debbie Lloyd of Distant, Pennsylvania and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Jack McCauley and two sisters, Norma Brocious and Lillian Brocious.

The family is grateful to Betty’s dear friend, Rita Walker for spending so much time with Betty during her illness.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 26, 2015 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home and Crematory at New Philadelphia and again on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the church. A service celebrating Betty’s life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the First Church of God at New Philadelphia with Rev. Gary Swogger officiating. Burial will follow in Dover Burial Park and following the committal service a luncheon will be held in the Hospitality Room in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover.
