Betty I. Powers, 80, of New Philadelphia, died Friday morning May 28, 2004, at the Hennis Care Center of Bolivar where she had resided since March.Betty was born January 20, 1924 at New Philadelphia to the late James M. Gowins and Lena I. (Prince) Gowins.She was a 1942 graduate of Horace Mann High School in Gary, Indiana. During the 1950’s Betty worked at the former Knapp Monarch “Sad Iron Factory”, Sift’s Shoe Store and U. S. Ceramic Tile where she met her husband. She was a member of Jerusalem Church at New Philadelphia where she participated in the Rebecca Circle and the quilter’s group. Betty formerly served on Boy Scout and Girl Scout committees.In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene S. Powers who died in 1986, a sister, Dorothy Zoelle, and four brothers, Robert, James, William and Russell Gowins.She is survived by a daughter, Astra M. (Kevin) Armstrong of New Philadelphia, a son, Dana E. Powers of New Philadelphia, granddaughters, Fiona S. Armstrong and Melinda J. Powers both of New Philadelphia, and a grandson Shawn A. Powers of Schenectady, NY.A Funeral Service to honor Betty’s life will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at 11:00AM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral home & Crematory with Rev. Dr. Terry Downin officiating. Friends and family may call Tuesday at the funeral home from 9:00 to 11:00AM. Cremation will follow the service.Those who wish may visit an online memorial for Betty at the funeral home’s website.
