Bertha Mary Tatliak, 89, of New Philadelphia, died Monday, October 12, 2015 in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.
A daughter of the late Philip and Minnie (Wilson) Whitehouse, Bertha was born November 22, 1925 at Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, England.
As a young lady, Bertha attended a dance in England where she met a United States Soldier. Then on March 3, 1945, she married that soldier, Michael Tatliak, and became a War Bride in Cobridge Christ Church in England. The couple shared 53 years of marriage prior to Michael’s passing on April 23, 1998.
Bertha was a member of the First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia. She was also a member of the Art Guild and AARP.
She was a gifted artist who especially enjoyed painting. Bertha was an avid reader and also enjoyed completing crossword puzzles, crocheting and knitting.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Swinderman of New Philadelphia; Philip (Alma) Tatliak of Tampa, Florida and Christine (Jack) Sims of New Philadelphia; her grandchildren, Daniel (Julie) Stemple of Owensboro, Kentucky, Brian Swinderman of New Philadelphia, Michael (Dionne) Tatliak and Eric (Michelle) Tatliak both of Tampa, Florida; three great grandsons, Brenton and Drew Stemple both of Owensboro, Kentucky and Michael Swinderman of Dover and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Lucy Whitehouse.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 16, 2015 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home and Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Bertha’s life will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Jeffrey Gerber officiating. Inurnment will follow in East Avenue Cemetery.
