Barry Lynn Russell, age 67, of Brightwood died Tuesday, October 5, 2010, in his home with his family at his side, following an eighteen month illness.A son of the late Thomas E. and Dorothy M. Mosshart Russell, Barry was born in Union Hospital at Dover on May 19, 1943.Barry grew up in Brightwood and was a 1961 graduate of the former Midvale High School. In June of 1964, Barry entered in the United States Navy where he served aboard the USS Forrestal and began his training in the electronics field.Upon his discharge in 1968, Barry attended and graduated from United Electronics Technical School at Cuyahoga Falls.In October of 1971, Barry met a young lady named Mary Shuman while helping friends prepare for a church Halloween Party. The couple had an instant attraction to one another and married in the Sherrodsville Wesleyan Church on August 20, 1972. Together, the couple reared two children.For eight years, Barry would serve Hennis Care Center at Dover as a maintenance technician prior to joining the staff of Dover Hydraulics where he retired from in October of 2009. Barry loved to work with electronic equipment and for a period of time operated a small business where he repaired television sets and stereo systems for others and had even figured out how to repair the electronic mechanism within laundromat dryers.Additionally, Barry enjoyed gardening, fishing, and camping. As a sports enthusiast, he especially enjoyed The Ohio State Buckeyes. He also was a NASCAR fan who supported any driver who would race a Ford car.For many years, Barry attended First Church of the Nazarene at New Philadelphia and had recently been attending Roxford United Methodist Church.Barry leaves behind his wife of thirty-eight years, Mary, their two children, Kevin Russell of Colorado, and Carrie (Frank) VanPelt of Perry Township. A granddaughter, Elise VanPelt, who shares his birthday, also survives.Two sisters, Sharon (Dan) Newton, of Indiana and Kathy Nixon, New Mexico and a brother, Ted (Susan) Russell of North Canton complete the family.The family will receive friends on Friday October 8, 2010, from 5-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Henry Mooney will lead a service celebrating Barry’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 1:30 PM. Burial in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia will follow with members of the Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the New Philadelphia VFW rendering military honors.Following services, the family will return to the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the New Philadelphia funeral home, where a meal and fellowship will be shared.The family requests memorial contributions in Barry’s name be directed to Roxford United Methodist Church, 771 Roxford Church Road SE, Dennison, Ohio 44621 or to Community Hospice, 201 W Third Street, Dover, Ohio 44622.
