Barbara Devore

Barbara Jean Devore, age 89, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully, early Sunday, August 11, 2024, in Hennis Care Center at Dover. 

Born on May 9, 1935, in Gnadenhutten, Ohio, Barbara was a daughter of the late Frank and Margaret Watkins Slocum and the step-daughter of the late Harold “Doc” Barr. 

She married Donald D. Devore on June 15, 1953, and together the couple raised five children. They shared in nearly 51 years of marriage prior to Donald’s passing on March 17, 2004. 

Barbara devoted her life to God and to her family. She had a deep faith in the Lord and spent time in prayer each day. As part of her daily prayer, there is no doubt that her five children were at the top of her list. Additionally, Barbara enjoyed her time as an Avon Representative. 

Barbara leaves behind her family that includes her children, Donald E. (Lori) Devore, Ricky A. (Connie) Devore, Connie (John) Douglas, Cindy (Michael) Weigand, and James L. Devore; 15 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren; her brothers, George Slocum, Clarence Slocum, Ralph Barr; her close friend, Bill Goshorn, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Barbara was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Slocum and Frank Jr. Slocum, and two grandchildren, Ryan and Jaclyn Douglas. 

The family will greet guests on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, from Noon – 2:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where Pastor Cory Shaffer will lead a service celebrating Barbara’s life at 2:00 PM in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will take place in the East Avenue Cemetery.
