Barbara Ann Makee

Barbara Makee, 87, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday, June 10, 2004 at Union Hospital, following a brief illness. Born November 29, 1916, on Rose Lane in New Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Ila Bechold and Carroll Wright. Mrs. Makee taught Home Economics and Ohio History for many years at Welty Junior High School in New Philadelphia. She also taught briefly in Strasburg and Painesville, OH. She was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, and many organizations, some of which include the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Huguenot Society, The College Club of Tuscarawas County, Ragersville Historical Society, Dover Historical Society, The Archaeological Society of Ohio and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Makee was a 1934 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and a 1938 graduate of The Ohio University where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of thirty-five years, Floyd Makee on September 26, 1976. Together they raised a daughter, Ila (Stephen) Buescher of Lyndhurst, Ohio. Survivors also include a sister, Jean (Dr. Fred) Andrews of New Philadelphia, granddaughters Elizabeth (Rob) Herron of Columbia, S.C., Susan (David)Woodmansee of Worthington, OH, one great-grandson Benjamin Woodmansee, a niece, Rebecca (William Jr.) Welfley of Dover, and nephews Bill (Cathy) Andrews of Dublin, OH, and Bruce (Maureen) Andrews of Columbus. The Rev. Michael Walters will officiate a funeral service for Mrs. Makee’s at 11 AM Monday, June 14, 2004 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 202 East High Avenue, New Philadelphia. Interment will follow in Fair Street Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a reception in the church fellowship hall following the service. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the Makee family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church in recognition of her lifelong membership in the congregation.
