Andrew S. Cihon, age 93, of Midvale, died Thursday, May 21, 2015 in Beacon Pointe Rehabilitation Center at Uhrichsville following a period of declining health.
A son of the late Max and Anna Cihon, Andy was born at Roswell, Ohio on November 28, 1921.
He attended school at Roswell and in 1936, joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, Company 1586 in Bozeman, Montana. In 1942, Andy enlisted into the United States Army and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II and was discharged from active duty on December 3, 1945.
Upon returning to the Tuscarawas Valley he worked for a brief time for the former Joy Manufacturing at New Philadelphia before becoming employed by then Warner & Swasey in 1951. Following more than 30 years of service with the company as a lift truck driver and Parts Department laborer, Andy retired from the Gradall Company in 1982.
Following his retirement, his greatest joy was time spent with family, especially his grandsons. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his good friend and brother-in-law, Denton and was a Lifetime Member of the former Midvale VFW.
He is survived by three children, Diana (Jim) Sims of Midvale, David (Wendy) Cihon of New Philadelphia, and Brenda (Mike) Mitres of Tippecanoe; three grandsons, Adam Mackey, Blake (Brittany) Mackey, and Evan (Leslie) Cihon; a sister, Ann Fosnight, his brother-in-law, Denton Clagg and his sister-in-law, Theresa Cihon as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Andy was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, whom he married on August 8, 1953 and celebrated 42 years of marriage prior to her passing on June 11, 1996; brothers, Joseph, John, Pete, and Mike Cihon and a sister, Mary Howard, and a granddaughter, Nicole Mackey.
The family will greet guests one hour prior to services on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 from 9:00 – 10:00 AM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where Pastor Brian Flood will lead a service celebrating Andy’s life at 10:00 AM in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
