Alvin Washington Phillabaum

October 10, 1926 — August 11, 2004

Alvin Washington Phillabaum, 77, of New Philadelphia died Wednesday August 11, 2004 at Morning View Care Center where he had resided since 2002.

He was born October 10, 1926 at Millersburg, Ohio to the late Edward and Genevine (Saxauer) Phillabaum and grew up in Dundee.

He attended Lower Trail Elementary and Dundee High Schools. During WWII “Al” served in the U.S. Army as a Pfc. working on board a transport ship as a medic assistant. In 1985 he retired from the Republic Steel Co. (LTV) in Massillon where he had been employed for 36 years. Al was a life member of the Dover Eagles and the Dover VFW, enjoyed fishing, dancing and playing cards, for over 25 consecutive years he camped summers at Clendening Lake, and during the mid-1950’s raced stock cars at Midvale, Strasburg and the Dover Fairgrounds.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Catherine (Morrison) Wanosik, whom he married on April 3, 1969; and brothers John and Lloyd Phillabaum.

Survivors include his life companion, Bea Sherrets of New Philadelphia; sister, Violet E. Frey of New Philadelphia; step-children, Katheryn (James Sheffield) Wanosik of Gahanna, Ohio and Joseph T. (Sandra) Wanosik of Avon, Ohio; nephews, Lawrence L. and Ronald D. Phillabaum of Dundee and Larry Phillabaum of Dover; five step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 14, 2004, 10:30 AM at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home and Crematory of New Philadelphia with Rev. Dr. Hugh Berry officiating. Visiting hours will be at the funeral home Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM. Burial will be at Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia with military honors to be provided by the Dover VFW.
