Alvin J. Mason

Alvin J. Mason, 75, of New Philadelphia, died January 10, 2009 in Union Hospital at Dover. A son of the late Clarence and Iola (Dround) Mason, Alvin was born January 14, 1933 at Akron, Ohio.Alvin served his county as a Marine during the Korean War. He was employed by Lyle’s Chevrolet at Akron and he retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber after 30 years of service.His main enjoyment and priority in life was his family. He loved camping and teaching his daughters how to fish and swim. He enjoyed having his grandchildren on his farm and he and his wife, the late Louise Mason, helped foster other children. Alvin also loved his cats.Alvin was a member of the Masonic Temple, the Independent Order of the Foresters and the Eagles. He will be remembered by many as a loving husband, father and dear friend.He is survived by his daughters, Gwendolynn Gilham of Canton, Belinda (Howard Gallagher) Meyers of Powhatton, Ohio and Cynthia (Phillip) Patterson of Uhrichsville; his grandchildren, Heather Gilham, Crystal (Raymond) Currie, Lonn Corso, Myron (Misty) Corso, Catherine (Ryan) Parrish; step-grandchildren, Shiela (Jim) Wallick, Jennifer (Marty) McDonald, Janette (Bill) Lafferty; great grandchildren, Desiree Gilham, Zoie Gilham, Kierra Woods, Thomasinia Woods, Alexander Corso, Zachary Corso, Alexis Corso, Jacob Corso, Alexia Parrish and Colt Parrish and step great grandchildren, Breanna Polucci, Sierra Polucci, Dominic Cottrell, Rayallen Cottrell, Zachary McDonald, Abby McDonald, Brandon Septer, Taylor Lafferty and Javyn Lafferty.Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Louise (Shields) Mason. The couple shared 51 years of marriage prior to her passing on January 22, 2007. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Benny Mason.There will be no public calling hours or services and cremation will take place through the care of Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Northlawn Memorial Gardens at Peninsula, Ohio.
