Alvin C. Marsh, Jr., age 90 of New Philadelphia, Ohio, passed away Monday, March 28, 2016.
Born at Dover, October 14, 1925, he was the son of the late Alvin C. Marsh, Sr., and Mina Kaserman Marsh.
He graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1943, enlisted immediately in the Navy V-12 officers training program, received his commission at Harvard Graduate School of Business in December, 1945, was stationed on Guam for six months following World War II and was released to inactive duty in the U.S. Navy on July 27, 1946. On January 31, 1947, he graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a Bachelor of Science in Business.
He began his business career at the Stone Creek Brick Company and the Ava Brick Company in March,1947.
He was a member of the Board of Directors and an officer in the following family-owned businesses: the Stone Creek Brick Company, the Ava Brick Company, Marsh Lumber Company, and Marsh Industries. He was also a director of The Reeves Banking and Trust Company and on the local regional Board of Directors of the Huntington National Bank.
He was also a director and past President of Region 4 of the Brick Institute of America, a member of the National Board of Directors of the Brick Institute of America, and a committee chairman and member of its Officers Advisory Committee.
On May 4, 1957, he married Carolyn June Laws and the couple celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary prior to her death on September 17, 2005.
The surviving family includes one daughter, Andrea Marsh (husband Raymond R.) Brenner of Hudson, Ohio; two sons, Edward Stuart Marsh of New Philadelphia and David Charles (wife Rebecca) Marsh of New Philadelphia; grandchildren Tyler Scott Marsh, Julia Grace Sushila Brenner, and Elizabeth Swegheimer.
Other surviving members of the family are two nieces, Catherine Marsh (husband Edward) Gould of New Philadelphia and family, Barbara Ann Werner of Canton and one nephew, William Richard Werner, Jr. of Laramie, Wyoming.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carolyn, their son Steven Roger Marsh, his sister Ruth Marsh Werner, his brother-in-law, W. Richard Werner, Sr., and his father and mother-in-law, W. Edward and Estella Laws.
For his entire life, Alvin has been a member of what is now the First United Church of Christ in New Philadelphia, Ohio—in the early years as a member of the SundaySchool and after confirmation as a member of the Church until his death. At various times during his church life, he was a member of the church choir, youth leader and advisor, trustee and elder. He was also a member of the Board of Christian Education and served on the church consistory board.
Alvin was a 60+ year member and past president of the New Philadelphia Rotary Club, a 57-year member of the New Philadelphia American Legion Post #139, a 58-year member of the New Philadelphia BPO Elks No. 510, a 60-year member and past board member of the Tuscarawas County YMCA, a Boy Scout and a past active Boy Scout financial fund leader in the area, a member of the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce, and a member and past director of the Union Country Club.
The family will receive friends Monday from 2 – 4 and from 6 – 8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia.
Pastors Jeff Gerber and Jill Lovett will lead Mr. Marsh’s funeral service Tuesday at 11:30 in First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia.
Interment with military honors will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
Family, friends and guests will gather for a reception in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home, upon the conclusion of graveside services.
