Alma Ruth Solomon, a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and humanitarian, died peacefully, Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the Schoenbrunn Healthcare facility in New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.
A daughter of the late Nick Enach Saunders of Town Creek, Alabama and Ruth Dailey Saunders of Prospect, Tennessee, Alma was raised in the East End community of Cincinnati.
Alma was a graduate of Withrow High School in Cincinnati and furthered her education at Mount St. Joseph and Chatfield Colleges, where she earned her degree in nursing.
Her passion for helping others spanned more than 25 years, as she worked for various hospitals throughout the Cincinnati area. She was a true humanitarian who believed helping others, no matter of their cultural or economic background, was vital to our survival as humans. She was one of the founding members of the East End Health Clinic, and a member of the Cincinnati area NAACP and the East End Community Council. As a strong believer in civil rights and equality for all, Alma often went out of her way to ensure everyone was treated fairly.
Alma had a deep faith in the Lord and displayed her God-given talents to the Phillips Chapel and Metropolitan CME congregations, where she played the piano for a number of years.
To her family, Alma was known as the family historian, cook, and writer, and loved walking in nature. She had a great appreciation for her family and devoted her life to caring for each member as challenges arose. To Alma, having a son with Downs Syndrome was a cup of tea. She effortlessly gave of her time to ensure that Enach was kept active and enjoyed a fulfilling life. As her family grew older, a younger generation emerged and Alma took her grandchildren under her wing and became an active part in their lives as well.
She leaves behind those who will cherish her memory, her daughters, Ruth (Dr. Marcell) Nwizu of New Philadelphia, Nicola (fiancée, Lyndon Crumes) Solomon of Cincinnati; her son, Enach Solomon of New Philadelphia; her beloved grandchildren, Nikita (fiancée, Rashid Covington) Solomon, Marcell Nwizu, Jr., Nicholas Nwizu, and Ebonie Solomon; her great-grandchildren, London Solomon-Covington and Cameron Solomon-Covington, and a sister-in-law, Goldie Saunders..
Completing the family are her special nieces and nephews, Loretta Dawson, Cherry Martin, Robert Saunders, Jr., and Nicholas Saunders.
In addition to her parents, Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Albert H. Solomon and her brother, Robert Saunders, Sr.
The family will greet guests on Saturday, June 13, 2015 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia from 10:00 – 11:00 AM where a home going service celebrating Alma’s life will begin in the funeral home’s chapel at 11:00 AM.
