Allie B. Curtis, 85, of New Philadelphia, went home to be with Lord on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 in Union Hospital at Dover.
A son of the late Omar and Dewey Cecil (White) Curtis, Allie was born on October 23, 1930 at Mason County, Kentucky.
He was a standout basketball player during his high school years playing in the Maysville, Kentucky area as well as in Owensboro, Kentucky. Allie was awarded Kentucky All State Honors in 1948. He went on to play basketball at Kentucky Wesleyan College and later served as a basketball coach at Hamersville, Ohio High School and Junior High. He ultimately graduated from Morehead State University with a Master’s Degree in Education.
On September 4, 1951, Allie married the love of his life, the former Jeannette Sharp of Owensboro, Kentucky and together the couple raised two sons, Wendell and Dwaine.
Allie retired from the public education field after more than 30 years of service where he served as a teacher, principal and special education instructor. He also taught driver’s education courses and served as a math tutor at Red Bird Mission School, a United Methodist mission located in the Appalachian region of Kentucky.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeannette Curtis; his sons, Wendell Curtis of New Philadelphia and Dwaine (Kim) Curtis of Lancaster, Ohio; his grandchildren, Alex Curtis, Sara McGinnis, Gary (Jessica) Curtis, Audra (Aaron) Carpenter, Jennifer (Casey) Stein, Matt (Kari) Curtis, and Trevor Curtis; 13 great grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn (Charles) Bailey; a brother, Ronnie Curtis and many nieces and nephews.
Allie was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Allie’s life will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in the Broadway United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia with Pastor Mick Foster officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service a luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall in the church.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Broadway United Methodist Church, 120 Church Avenue SE, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 or to Gideons International, P.O. Box 261, Dover, OH 44622.
