Allen D. “Mike” McCombs, Jr., age 89, of Strasburg, Ohio, formerly of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and a winter resident of Panama City Beach, Florida, died peacefully early Friday evening, July 5, 2013, in the care of the Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia, with his family at his side.
Born at Aspinwall, PA, January 11, 1924, he was a son of the late Allen D. McCombs, Sr. Esq. and the late Ruth Bletcher McCombs.
A 1940 graduate of Aspinwall High School, in Aspinwall, PA where he was a standout academically and athletically in football and track and field, Allen went on to study at Carnegie-Mellon, Robert Morris and the University of Pittsburgh throughout his lifetime, however World War II interrupted his academic pursuits early on and “Mike” as he was known to family and friends, enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the North African, Italian, and Philippine Island Theatres with the Army Corps of Engineers earning an honorable discharge at the end of the war.
For most of his life, Mr. McCombs worked as Treasurer of the John F. Casey Construction Company, in Blawnox , PA.
He’ll be remembered by his family for his service to others, and his abiding faith, serving for more than 25 years as a Deacon and volunteer book-keeper for the First Baptist Church of New Kensington, PA.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 66 years, the former Barbara Kennedy Johnson, whom he wed on June 28, 1947.
Together they reared a family of seven: Allen D. McCombs III (Valerie), of Latham, NY, Reverend Doctor Guy Everett McCombs (Lee) of Huntsville AL, Barbara Kennedy McCombs of Norfolk, VA, Melanie Anne McCombs (Gary Gill) of Plum, PA, Heather Jean McCombs (Paul Hicks) of Warner Robins, GA, Katherine Culzean Rivas (Albert) of Huntsville, AL, and Dr. Michael Mitchell McCombs , DO (Theresa), of Dover, OH.
Nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren complete the family.
In addition to his parents, Allen is preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Jean McCombs and Claire Vandling.
Cremation is planned with no public visitation or service. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 716 Commercial Avenue SW New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
