Allen Cyril Packer, 96, of New Philadelphia, and recently of New Dawn Retirement Community in Dover, died Thursday, June 2, 2005 at Union Hospital in Dover.A son of the late A.E. and Julia (Carpenter) Packer, Cy was born April 24, 1909 in New Philadelphia.He graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1927 and 1929 and then attended the Ohio State University for one and a half years. Cy went into business with his father in 1938, and eventually bought the corporation, A.E. Packer, Inc., after his father retired.Cy retired at the age of 70 and was active with his church, the Community Baptist Church in Dover. He was also a member of the Lions Club where he served as past president.He enjoyed photography and was learning to operate a computer while at New Dawn. He kept in touch with many family members and friends through email.He is survived by his wife, Vera E. (Walter) Packer, whom he married on May 30, 1936; one daughter, Barbara (Kennard) Beitzel of New Philadelphia; one son, Alan R. Packer of Blowing Rock, North Carolina; four grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one sister, Lucile Townsend of Canton.He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Brett W. Beitzel; one great grandson, Jesse James Brock; and one brother, Charles Packer.Visitation will be Monday, June 6, 2005 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia. Funeral services will be conducted by Bob West on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Chapel. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia. A memorial reception will be held at the Geib Family Center in New Philadelphia immediately following the committal service.Memorial contributions in memory of Cy may be made to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover, OH 44622.
