Allan Dale Flory

May 22, 1957 — April 8, 2014

Allan Dale Flory, age 56, of New Philadelphia was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on April 8th, 2014 while in the care of Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia. Allan courageously battled complications of a brain bleed and was surrounded by his beloved family at the time of his passing.

Born at Union Hospital at Dover, Ohio on May 22, 1957, Allan is a son of Ruth (Warner) Flory Goulder of New Philadelphia. He was blessed with two loving fathers, Paul Westley Flory and Raymond Goulder, who preceded him in death.

Allan was a 1976 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and on April 22, 1978 he married the love of his life, the former Christina Taylor. Through their nearly 36 years of marriage, the couple shared a special relationship of love that comes only once in a lifetime.

Allen retired from ODOT District 11 on December 31st, 2012 after 34 years as a material tester and enjoyed his time as a carrier for the Times Reporter, having made many friends along his route. Those who knew him best; were aware he was a diehard fan of the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes. Although Allan had a very quiet nature, it was easy for him to make true friends. Among those were Nancy Short, Ronnie Beitzel, Tom Kenny, Cyril Leyda and Bryan Lehigh as well as his lifelong, Jim Chamerlin.

Allan grew up in a Christian family and loved his Lord from an early age. He spent years at the First Baptist Church at New Philadelphia and for the past five years, attended the Salvation Army Chapel at New Philadelphia. Allan loved his church family and donated his “world famous” hams for Thanksgiving dinners. In addition to his devotion to his Lord and church, family time and activities were among his biggest passions. He often sacrificed greatly to provide for those he loved making every holiday or birthday a special and memorable occasion.

Without even knowing, Allan changed the lives of those around him. His nephew, Tim Cleveland, being the best example; Tim was like a son to Allan and he would surely be proud of his actions as he stepped up as his caregiver and offered a great deal of support to his family during these last weeks.

In addition to his mother and wife, Allan is survived by his beloved daughters Jessica (Brian) Ross of Dover and Crystal (Robert) Minger of West Salem, Ohio and a sister, Linda Conner of New Philadelphia.

While he was known by many names: Al, Allan, Dale, Big Al and PaPa Bear, he was proudest of “papaw”. He would smile from ear to ear when his grandkids sang the papaw song and will be greatly misses by his grandchildren Calahan, Dominic and Manning Allan Ross, Casey France and Sophie Arellanos and an expected grandchild who is due to arrive in September. He also will be missed by his “couch” buddy Toto Moto; numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews who loved and respected him.

The family will greet guests on Saturday, April 12, 2014 from 9:30 – 11:30 AM in the Salvation Army Chapel at New Philadelphia where Lieutenants Scott and Jessica Duperree will lead a service celebrating Allan’s life at 11:30 AM. Burial will follow in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover. Following the services, all are invited to join the family for a time of food and fellowship in the Salvation Army Social Hall.

The family would be deeply honored if memorial contributions in Allan’s name would be directed to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
