Alice I. Ross, 86, a lifelong resident of Bolivar, passed away in Hennis Care Centre of Bolivar on Friday, January 25, 2013 following a period of declining health.
Born in Bolivar on February 13, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Elmer and Nora Alice (Cooper) Huffman.
After graduating from high school, Alice married her lifelong companion and friend, Russell M. Ross in Mardella, Maryland on March 20, 1947. They were the blessed parents of three children, Barbara, Carol and Richard.
A loving and supportive wife, mother, and grandmother, Alice never missed an opportunity to care for her family whether it was being a spectator at a sporting or band event or just enjoying the simple act of being together at a camp site.
Alice loved cheering for the Cleveland Indians or her hometown Tusky Valley Trojans. She was an active Band Booster member throughout her children’s school careers and also had a passion for decorating cakes and cooking. Whether it was fishing or camping, Alice loved being outdoors with her family and friends as well.
Alice’s professional career with the Tuscarawas Valley School District spanned more than 21 years. She was a secretary and spent the majority of her career as a cook.
Her faith was nurtured at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Bolivar.
She also spent a great deal of time nurturing friendships and serving area youth as both an Auxilary member of the Fort Laurens American Legion Post #190 in Bolivar and as a 4H advisor for the Bolivar Lassies for 15 years.
She will be deeply missed by her husband, Russell; her children, Barbara Goldsmith and Carol (David) Meiser, both of Bolivar, and her son, Richard (Dan Hill) Ross of Sugar Land, TX; her grandchildren, Tresha (John Fabynick) Goldsmith of Atlanta, GA, Brian (Michelle) Goldsmith and Cara (Nick) Alleshouse, both of Bolivar; her great-grandson, Brandon Goldsmith; and special family friend, Manuel Cueva and family of Henderson, NV. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins complete her family.
In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Kieffer; her brothers, Raymond, Jim, Forrest “Joe” and Dale Huffman; and her son-in-law, Larry Goldsmith.
Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover, 5600 N. Wooster Ave., Dover, on Monday, January 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. A service celebrating Alice’s life will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. with The Rev. Melodie L.
