Alice Holmes, 90, of New Philadelphia, passed away Friday, September 1, 2017 in the New Dawn Retirement Center at Dover.
A daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Williams) James, Alice was born October 2, 1926 at Barnhill, Ohio.
Alice served as an officer at the Lady’s Army-Navy Auxiliary and was known for her lunch specials that she cooked there. She was also known to have loved to go dancing with her late husband. Above all, her favorite thing in life was her family whom she loved unconditionally.
She is survived by her four children, Mallory (Kenny) Hutchison, Larry (Sandy) Holmes, Garry (Holly) Holmes, and Becky Kostelnik; eight grandchildren, Robert Holmes, Jr., Amy (Brad) McDougal, Chad (Ashley) Hutchison, Steve (Wendy) Clum, Todd (Heather) Holmes, Greg (Chelsea) Holmes, Megan (Dirk) Kreinbihl and Ryan (Emily)Holmes; 20 great-grandchildren, Savannah (Garth) Lahna, Ethan Holmes, Steve, Aden, Layla, and Peyton Clum, Cole and Cade McDougal, Cobe, Bodie, Kendal and Reese Hutchison, Macy and Caden Stevens, Carsen Graham, Carter and Casey Holmes, Bryxton and Brielle Kreinbihl and Lincoln Holmes; as well as two sisters-in-law, Evelyn (Cliff) Redenger and Rita Holmes.
In addition to her parents, Alice is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Arnold Holmes, whom she married November 10, 1945; a son, Robert W. Holmes, Sr.; a grandson, Brian Hutchison; a son-in-law, Larry Kostelnik; a sister, Elizabeth Belknap; and five half-siblings, Eddie James, Virginia Harsha, Veda Ott, George Phillips, and Lester Phillips.
Visitation will take place Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 2 to 5 PM and again one hour prior to the service in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A service celebrating Alice’s life will take place Monday, September 11, 2017 at 11 AM in the funeral home’s chapel with Pastor Jimmy Stull. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
The family would like to thank the personnel at the New Dawn Retirement Center for their care and compassion over the past seven and a half years.
