Alfred C. “Bud” Walker, III, 86, of New Philadelphia, died February 2, 2009 in Union Hospital at Dover.A son of the late K.G. “Kelly” and Mertie (Peterson) Walker, Alfred was born January 7, 1923 at Dennison, Ohio.He was a 1941 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and he then enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1942. Alfred spent 11 months as a P.O.W. during World War II.Following the war, he attended the University of Michigan and Marietta College and completed his graduate work at the University of Kansas.Upon completion of his education, Alfred became one of the first ground water geologists in the nation. He also served as the principal geologist for the Ohio Division of Water for many years.Alfred was a former resident of both Westerville, Ohio and Newcomerstown, Ohio and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.He is survived by his son, Bill (Lois) Walker of Port St. Joe, Florida; his daughter, Sally Walker of New Philadelphia; a granddaughter, Betsy (Brian) Walker of Kalispell, Montana and two great granddaughters, Zia and Kaiya.Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 43 years, Anna Meese Walker who passed away in 1988 and a sister, Eleanor.A funeral service celebrating Alfred’s life will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with Rev. Richard Greenwood officiating. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Alfred’s family will receive guests one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.The family suggests that contributions be made in Alfred’s memory to the First Presbyterian Church, 217 East High Avenue, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
