Alberta A. “Berti” Kaserman, age 93, of Country Club Retirement Campus at Dover and a former resident of New Philadelphia, died early Sunday, March 16, 2014 in Union Hospital at Dover.
A daughter of the late Albert W. Pretzeus and Mary M. “Maggie” (Yakley) and Robert E. Stein, Bertie was born at Fiat, Ohio on March 18, 1920.
She attended school at Fiat and moved to New Philadelphia in 1937 when she married Norman Kaserman. Together the couple reared one daughter.
Bertie was a longtime member of the First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia and also held memberships with the Eastern Star Lodge #222, Judea White Shrine of Jerusalem #55, Women of the Moose #290 and the New Philadelphia Eagles #2251 Ladies Auxiliary.
For many years, she assisted her husband in the operation of the former Kaserman Funeral Home at New Philadelphia. However, her first passion and priority in life was caring for her family. She greatly loved cooking for them and organizing family gatherings. Additionally, she had a loving and caring personality and was an individual who enjoyed doing for others.
She is survived by her daughter, Elaine (Bill) Schwartz; a grandson, Craig N. Schwartz all of New Philadelphia; a granddaughter, Lisa (Bruce) Abbuhl of Katy, Texas; two great-granddaughters, Brittany and Jenna Abbuhl and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her father, mother and step-father, Bertie was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, who died on July 12, 1965; a brother, Charles Pretzeus; two sisters, Lillian Shaw and Pearl Levengood; a half-brother, Robert Stein; two half-sister, Twila Gunter and Opal Leggett and three step-brothers, Harold, Walter, and Arthur Stein.
The family will receive guests on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Jim Borton will lead a service in the funeral home’s chapel on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Following the service, guests are invited to share in a time of food and fellowship in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home.
