Albert E. “Gene” Sharkey, age 74, of Gnadenhutten, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008, in Beacon Pointe Rehab Center at Uhrichsville, following a courageous and hard fought battle with cancer.Gene was born on November 8, 1933, at Crooksville, Ohio.On January 22, 1956, Gene married the former Donna Heidy in the Gnadenhutten Methodist Church. Gene spent his professional career as an oil field supervisor for the Mutual Oil & Gas Company prior to his retirement in 1984.For many years, Gene was an active member of the both the Uhrichsville Moose and Eagles Lodge.Camping and spending time outdoors were two of Gene’s many enjoyments. In addition to those activities, Gene enjoyed the company of his family and friends as he loved to recount and embellish upon his many stories of his days in the oil field. Many would often look to Gene for help when it came to fixing mechanical devices. He never encountered a problem that he could not solve and truly took pleasure in helping others.During the summer months, Gene took to tending his garden. As part of his giving nature, he would often give away many of the fruits of his labor. Throughout the years, Gene took a liking to the family dogs and always enjoyed their companionship.In addition to his wife, Donna, Gene is survived by a family that includes two sons, Ronald (Pat) Sharkey of Newcomerstown and Alan (Silvia) Sharkey of Killeen, Texas and two daughters, Barbara (Rick) Winter of Navarre and Sue (Steve) Hartsough of Uhrichsville.Six grandsons, Steven (Jennifer) Freeland, Mathew (Mallory) Norman, Tyson Sharkey, Chad Winter, Daniel Winter and Brandon Brown; three granddaughters, Kayla Sharkey, Alexandria (Ash) Gamble, and Katie Winter and five great-grandchildren complete the family.The family will receive friends on Monday, November 3, 2008, from 4:00 â?? 6:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Following visitation, Reverend Hugh Berry will lead a 6:00 PM memorial service in the funeral home’s chapel. The family has planned a private graveside service to take place in the Gnadenhutten Clay Union Cemetery.In appreciation for their conscientious care and efforts, the family wishes to extend a very heartfelt and sincere thank you to Dr. Sorolla, the staff of Beacon Point Rehab Center, and the All American Home Health Agency. Your kind and attentive care was welcomed and deeply appreciated by Gene and the entire family throughout his illness.
