Alan F. Gintz, 62, of Ft. Myers, Florida passed away of natural causes in his home on December 8, 2015.
Born in Dover, Ohio on April 17, 1953, Alan was the son of Marjorie G. (Diefenbach) Gintz and the late Robert G. Gintz.
After graduating from New Philadelphia High School in 1971, he continued his formal education at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York and graduated in 1975. He then participated in numerous professional training courses at America Maritime Officers schools in Toledo and Florida. Upon graduation from the Academy, Alan was commissioned Ensign- U.S. Navy Reserve. He was honorably discharged in the summer of 1982.
Alan served as a merchant mariner on ships on the Great Lakes for more than 30 years, retiring as a Captain in 2009. He was employed by Bethlehem Steel, Oglebay-Norton and American Steamship Company over the course of his career. In addition to his residency in New Philadelphia until 1980, he lived near Marietta for 11 years and presently resided in Fr. Myers, Florida for more than 20 years.
Alan was also a former member of the First United Church of Christ in New Philadelphia.
Alan will be deeply missed by his mother, Marjorie Gintz of Dover; his sister, Carol (Calvin, Jr.) Tobin of Black Hawk, South Dakota; and his nephews, Brian (Sara) Wurtzel of Minnesota and David Wurtzel of North Carolina.
A service celebrating Alan’s life will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Monday, December 21 beginning at 11 am with visitation from 9:30 to 11 prior to the service. Pastors Jeff Gerber and Jill Lovett will officiate his service. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to their favorite charity in Alan’s name.
